Drowned in Sound: Glasgow’s Music Scene

Hollie Gallen gives us the inside scoop on Glasgow’s incredible music scene.

It should come as no surprise to you that the city of Glasgow has truly confirmed its status within the UK music scene. Whether it’s big-name greats like Pink Floyd or newcomers such as Pearl & the Puppets, they all flock to Glasgow in their hundreds to have a crack at conquering the famous Glaswegian gig-goers.

It is the this fact that some would argue is the key factor which gives Glasgow its status as the favourite venue of a myriad of acts from every genre. With many venues, scattered around various parts of the city, whether it’s the small & intimate surroundings of the Oran More or the large & brash thrash-home of the O2 Academy, it’s undoubtable that Glasgow has everything the discerning gig-goer could possibly want.

From the stunning reclaimed cinema, The O2 ABC, to the giant hangars of the SECC and of course Scotland’s National Stadium, Hampden, there’s something for everyone and they all honour Glasgow’s commitment to unique venues and incredible nights out. However, it is the home-grown Glaswegian acts, such as Paolo Nutini & 2009 Orange Unsigned Act winner Tommy Reilly, who have set the stage for the next generation of incredible young artists. Glasgow has a stunning range and depth of marvellous acts, you just have to know where to look.

With Scottish bands and artists relishing the chance to return to their home city, exuding the confidence that comes from successful tours and albums, they will be greeted with the astonishing pride, encouragement and sense of belonging that Glaswegians are famous for. With Tommy Reilly recently deciding a trip to the O2 ABC, a venue he treasures and spent many a Saturday night queuing outside during his formative years, it is obvious that even those who have ventured to the four corners of the world keep their nostalgic love for Glasgow in their hearts.

Why not find out about Glasgow’s music scene for yourself and get along to a gig when you’re in the city?
